Pilates is a system of exercises that focuses on postural control and symmetry, gradual progression from partial to full range of motion, breathing awareness and coordination with movement. It is a comprehensive whole body training and conditioning method that is one of the safest forms of exercise.
Pilates includes mat exercises and exercises on equipment specifically designedfor assistance or resistance through springs. The exercises progress from partial to full weight bearing and from supported to unsupported positions. The movements are performed in gradually increasing range and muscles and joints are strengthened throughout the range progressively, which decreases risk of sprains and strains. The exercises are done in different body positions, as well as on unstable surfaces andwith a variety of propsto challenge balance and coordination.
Pilates for rehabilitation
Versatility of the equipment and variety of possible movements make Pilates an ideal method for rehabilitation, since it can be adapted for any person’s abilities, limitations, and demands. It is suitable for an elite athlete recovering from injury, for a person after brain surgery, a pregnant woman, and for an older adult.
As a physical therapist and a certified Pilates instructor in both classical Pilates and Pilates for rehabilitation, Irina integrates the Pilates method when working with her wellness clients and when treating people with various conditions, including but not limited to back pain, osteoporosis, joint replacement, pregnancy and postpartum, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, incontinence.
